The Terrell community is grieving the loss of Officer Jacob Candanoza, 28, who was tragically killed during a routine traffic stop late Sunday night. According to officials, the incident occurred around 11 p.m. on December 8, 2024, on the 1600 block of South State Highway 34, near a Super 8 motel.
During the traffic stop, Officer Candanoza called for backup as part of standard procedure. However, moments later, the Terrell Police Department received two urgent 911 calls reporting that an officer had been shot. Department spokesperson Mary Hauger confirmed the details of the distressing event.
Upon their arrival at the scene, responding officers discovered that Officer Candanoza had sustained gunshot wounds. He was promptly transported to a local hospital, but despite the medical team’s efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Remarkably, even while critically injured, Officer Candanoza managed to relay vital information about the suspect’s vehicle, including the license plate number, to dispatchers.
This crucial information enabled law enforcement, including state Highway Patrol and off-duty officers, to locate and engage in a pursuit of the suspect into Van Zandt County.
