The motocross world has lost a true icon with the passing of Scott “The Burner” Burnworth on December 12, 2024, at the age of 61. Burnworth’s exceptional speed, work ethic, and passion for the sport made him a beloved figure, not only among fans but also within the paddock, where he earned the respect of fellow riders and competitors alike.
Born on January 24, 1963, in Jamul, California, Scott Burnworth’s journey in motocross began as a teenager when he competed in local races. His impressive skill set soon caught the eye of the racing community, and by the late 1970s, he had begun to make a name for himself. In 1980, he turned professional, signing with Suzuki and embarking on a career that would see him become one of the standout riders of the 1980s.
Burnworth’s racing career is highlighted by his time in the AMA Motocross and Supercross championships, where his incredible speed earned him the nickname “The Burner.” One of his major accomplishments was being named the AMA 125cc Motocross Rookie of the Year in 1980. In 1983, he finished second in the AMA 250cc Motocross Championship, solidifying his place as one of the top competitors of his era. Though he never captured a national title, Burnworth’s consistency, grit, and fighting spirit earned him eight-career AMA Motocross National podiums.
