In a turn of events early Sunday morning, two men lost their lives in a tragic multi-vehicle collision in the Maryvale area of Phoenix. The victims, identified as 35-year-old Erick Segura and 37-year-old Alonso Franco, were killed in a head-on crash near 73rd Avenue and Indian School Road around 2 a.m.
According to Phoenix police, the incident occurred when the 28-year-old driver of a Chevrolet Camaro, heading eastbound, attempted to change lanes to overtake a slower vehicle. During this maneuver, the driver overcorrected, causing his car to swerve uncontrollably into the westbound lanes, where it collided head-on with another vehicle. The impact was catastrophic, leaving Segura and Franco, who were passengers in one of the cars, with fatal injuries. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but sadly, both men were pronounced dead on site.
In addition to the two victims, a 16-year-old boy was also involved in the crash and was transported to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and he is expected to recover. The 28-year-old driver of the Camaro, who caused the crash, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized for treatment. He is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
The wreckage from the collision painted a grim scene. Video footage captured two severely damaged sedans amidst scattered debris, a stark reminder of the sheer force of the crash. First responders worked diligently to clear the scene and assess the damage as authorities began their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
