Donna Kay Rule was more than a professional barrel racer; she was a beloved wife, mother, and friend whose life was marked by passion, resilience, and a deep love for her family. Her untimely passing in an accident at the NFR has left the rodeo community and her loved ones heartbroken.
Donna’s journey into barrel racing was deeply personal. Growing up around horses, she was inspired by her father, Don Frederickson, a bronc rider and team roper. This early exposure to the rodeo world laid the foundation for Donna’s future in barrel racing.
Her marriage to John Rule added another dimension to her life. Together, they owned and operated the National Saddlery shop in Oklahoma City, creating custom saddles for PRCA champions.
Family was central to Donna’s life. Her children, Marshall and Kayla, were her pride and joy. Despite her demanding career, Donna always prioritized her family, often involving them in her rodeo adventures.
Her father’s influence remained a guiding force throughout her life, and she honored his memory by using his saddle in significant events. Donna’s personal and professional lives were intertwined.
Her transition from a top horse trainer to a competitive barrel racer was catalyzed by an injury to her horse, A Juicy Adventure, in 2017. This led her to focus on High Valor, a horse she had purchased as a four-year-old. Their journey together was one of mutual growth, culminating in multiple awards and widespread recognition.
