Goldsboro mother was killed and three others including her young son were seriously injured when a wrong-way driver collided with their SUV and then fled on foot early Sunday along U.S. 70 Bypass near Clayton, officials said.
The hit-and-run crash happened just after 3 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 70 Bypass near mile marker 319, which is Cornwallis Road, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The wrong way driver was going west in the eastbound lanes in a white BMW, which caught fire after the wreck. That driver, a man, ran from the scene and managed to evade searches that included K-9 units, troopers said.
A white Jeep Cherokee was heading east in the eastbound lanes with four Goldsboro occupants, including a small child, the highway patrol said.
Kortney Summer Atkins, 24, a passenger in the Jeep, died on the way to WakeMed, troopers said.
A woman who was driving, along with a 4-year-old boy and his father were all taken to WakeMed with serious injuries.
The father of the boy later spoke and confirmed he was married to Atkins and their child was the boy who was injured in the wreck.
